The choice of the right bath fluid for your application is key to ensure optimal temperature control results.
How Do I Choose My Bath Fluid?
The first step in choosing the right Thermal Bath Oil for your application is understanding what kind of fluid you need.
Silicone or Water-Glycol Based?
The Thermal Bath Fluids based on silicone are chemically inert substances which do not affect metals like iron, copper, zinc, aluminium, chrome or nickel.
Compared to other brands, JULABO Thermal fluids have an extraordinarily low electrical conductivity and when correctly stored, the fluid will keep for at least 12 months as they are not susceptible to climatic influences.
Also, when used properly, minimal cracking and oxidation degradation will occur ensuring a long fluid life. Some JULABO bath fluids based on silicone contain a stabilizer to delay oxidation and thus increase the lifetime of the oil.
However, if you are operating fluids at temperatures close to the recommended limits, visually inspect and/or exchange the fluid every 2-3 months.
Silicone based bath fluids can swell and dissolve silicone hoses, therefore cannot be used with silicone hoses. Instead, you can use JULABO metal tubing, JULABO Viton tubing or JULABO PTFE tubing for the temperature control of external systems.
The Thermal Bath Fluids based on water-glycol or Monoethylene glycol with anti-corrosion additives have excellent thermal characteristics and a low viscosity.
They can be applied at temperatures below the freezing point of water, as they provide anti-freeze protection.
However, you must be sure to carefully observe the ratio. When using water-glycol based bath fluids, the mixing ratio of water to glycol must be checked on a regular basis (50:50). If you have an increased glycol content, the liquid may become flammable; and if you have an increased water content, it may cause the liquid to freeze at low temperatures.
The next step is to take into consideration is the working temperature range in which you operate your application. This is the most important criteria to determine how you are going to choose the correct bath fluid.
So, the type of bath oil you need will be determined by the type of unit you have, as well. In total, there are 11 different Thermal Bath Fluids available, seven for open systems, four for closed systems.

Bath Fluid Thermal G
JULABO Thermal G is a bath fluid based on water-glycol and features excellent thermal properties. In addition, JULABO Thermal G supplies anti-freeze protection and thus it is most suitable for applications below the freezing point of water.
When using Thermal G for long time periods, the mixing ratio of water to glycol must be checked regularly as it always should be 50:50.
In case of increased glycol content, the Thermal G may be-come flammable. Also, increased water content may cause the Thermal G to freeze at low temperatures. Suitable for the JULABO Refrigerated Circulators, the Heating Circulators and the Chillers/Recirculating Coolers.

JULABO Thermal M is a bath fluid based on alcohol ethoxylate.
Using this fluid below the lowest mentioned working temperature may result in temperature fluctuation or high temperature alarm, due to hot fluid areas around the heater.
To avoid this from happening you should reduce the heater capacity during heating up until the lowest mentioned working temperature is reached.
This bath fluid is suitable for the JULABO TopTech and HighTech Series.

JULABO Thermal HS is a bath fluid based on silicone, which means that it cannot be used with silicone hoses. Silicone based oils can swell and dissolve silicone hoses, therefore, only metal tubing, Viton tubing or PTFE tubing should be used with this oil, for the temperature control of external systems.
Also, using this fluid below the lowest mentioned working temperature may result in temperature fluctuation or high temperature alarm due to hot fluid areas around the heater.
The recommendation is to reduce the heater capacity during heating up until the lowest mentioned working temperature is reached.
Suitable for use with the JULABO Heating Circulators and Refrigerated Circulators.

These are both silicone-based oils. As such, they cannot be used with silicone hoses. The reason for this being that silicone-based bath fluids can swell and dissolve silicone hoses. Instead, you can use metal tubing, Viton tubing or PTFE tubing for the temperature control of external systems.
The H5 bath fluid is suitable for use with the JULABO Heating Circulators and the Refrigerated Circulators.
The Thermal fluid HY is also suitable for use with the JULABO Refrigerated Circulators.

A silicone based bath fluid with extended temperature range.The Thermal H10 can be used within the temperature range from -40°C to +180°C with circulators of the TopTech and HighTecc series, as well as CF31 and CF41.
As mentioned above, silicone based fluids cannot be used with silicone hoeses as they can swell and dissolve them. Metal tubing, Viton tubing or PTFE tubing should be used instead for the temperature control of external systems.

Bath fluid Thermal H20S
This silicone-based bath oil comes with an additional stabilizer for longer fluid life. As this is a silicone-based bath fluid, it can swell and dissolve silicone hoses. Therefore, only metal tubing, Viton tubing or PTFE tubing should be used with this oil, for the temperature control of external systems.

Bath fluid Thermal HL30
JULABO Thermal HL30 is a bath fluid based on water-glycol and features excellent thermal properties. It supplies anti-freeze protection, therefore, it is most suitable for applications below the freezing point of water.
When using Thermal HL30 for long time periods, the mixing ratio of water to glycol must be checked regularly and be 50:50. In case of increased glycol content, the Thermal HL30 may become flammable. On the other hand, increased water content may cause the Thermal HL30 to freeze at low temperatures.

Bath fluid Thermal HL60
JULABO Thermal HL60 is a bath fluid based on silicone with a wide working temperature range from -60 °C to +250 °C.
As this is a silicone-based oil, it cannot be used with silicone hoses. The reason for this being that silicone-based bath fluids can swell and dissolve silicone hoses. Instead, you can use metal tubing, Viton tubing or PTFE tubing for the temperature control of external systems.
Suitable for use with the PRESTO™ series.
Bath fluid Thermal H250S
JULABO Thermal H250S is a bath fluid based on silicone. It has a wide working temperature range and can be used for high temperatures up to +250 °C.
For temperature control of external systems, metal tubing, Viton tubing or PFTE tubing should be use instead of silicone hoses. The reason for this is because silicone-based bath fluids can swell and dissolve silicone hoses.
Suitable for use with the Forte HT series.
Bath Fluid Thermal H350
JULABO Thermal H350 is a very stable hydrocarbon-based bath fluid. It has a wide working temperature range and can be used for high temperatures up to +350 °C.
Using the fluid below the lowest mentioned working temperature may result in temperature fluctuation or high Temperature alarm due to hot fluid areas around the heater.
To avoid this from happening, reduce the heater capacity during heating up until the lowest mentioned working temperature is reached.
Silicone hoses are suitable only for limited use with liquids based on hydrocarbons as their plasticizer dissolves and the hoses become brittle, especially at high temperatures this may entail risk of injury.
Suitable for use with the Forte HT series.
