Phosphate Buffered Saline:

Phosphate Buffered Saline, also known as PBS, is a solution that is used commonly in biological research. These are water-based salt solutions that contain disodium hydrogen phosphate, sodium chloride and sometimes, potassium chloride and potassium dihydrogen phosphate. The PBS Buffers help with supporting a constant pH and osmolarity and ion concentrations in the solution match that of the human body.

There are multiple uses for Phosphate Buffered Saline as it is isotonic and non-toxic to most cells. The use of PBS includes substance dilution and cell container rinsing as well as when paired with EDTA, it can be used to disengage attached and clumped cells. It has been proven to be an acceptable alternative to viral transport medium when regarding the transportation and storage of RNA viruses. However, it cannot be paired with divalent metals such as zinc as this will result in precipitation.

Dulbecco’s Phosphate Buffered Saline:

Dulbecco’s Phosphate Buffered Saline is intended for use in the maintenance of mammalian cells. The balanced salt solution allows an environment to maintain the structural and physiological integrity of cells, in vitro. This solution is most used in cell enumeration as a diluent, for rinsing cells and can be used as a buffer in many chromatographic procedures. Dulbecco’s PBS without Ca Mg is used for the washing and resuspended cells during a dissociation process. This is when the presence of calcium and magnesium can inhibit tryspin activity. Phosphate Buffered Solution is often combined with agents in cell and tissue treatment and supplements like antibiotics can be added as a sterile supplement to the buffer solution.

Phosphate Buffered Saline with EDTA

Phosphate Buffered Solution with EDTA can be used for the prevention of clumping. EDTA is often used to prevent cells for storage from sticking together and in blood to prevent coagulation too. When it comes to being used as a buffer in procedures, it generates dendritic cells from monocytes.
